Emotional eating and weight loss

Let’s face it, if you find yourself worrying about your weight, or feeling like you want to diet, or wishing you were thinner, the problem of being overweight, or the problem of comfort eating is merely a symptom of a far deeper issue.

 

If you find yourself eating when bored, tired, stressed, anxious, depressed, confused, even excited or happy, you do it simply because you are not comfortable with being with the emotion you are feeling.


Isn’t it strange that some people are so uncomfortable about feeling happy that they need to smoke, drink or overeat to feel ok about it?


Some people are not able to sit with uncomfortable feelings of stress or depression. They feel helpless and confused about what to do with these emotions so they try to drown out the feeling with food.


If this describes you then you are not alone. Around a year ago I went to a slimmers club to do some research. There were 34 attendees and between them, they had clocked up over 700 years of dieting between them. Can you believe that? Most of the visitors were between 30 and 50 years old and yet that would mean that on average each had dieted for over 20 years!!


Dieting for weight loss is a massive industry, but it doesn’t address the root cause – weight gain and comfort eating is done because we want to feel better.


When you feel better about yourself, you can develop the right skills and habits to maintain a healthy weight and manage your emotions in a healthy way.


When you learn how to manage your emotions without reaching for food or anything else then you can feel calm and relaxed and in control.
